Expand Access at Select Platforms (P1)

Design Objective: Widen platforms 6/8 & 10/12 on the south side of Union Station to better accommodate commuter trains that are often at capacity during peak travel periods. Widening these platforms would provide an opportunity to introduce direct vertical access, such as stairs, escalators, and ADA-compliant elevators, between platform and street level, creating an alternative to entering and exiting the station through the heavily used and congested Concourse area.

Jackson Street Platform Access (P2)

Design Objective: Create direct platform access to Jackson Street to enhance safety and accessibility for commuter passengers by allowing an alternative to entering and exiting the station through the heavily used and congested Concourse, including installation of an ADA-compliant elevator. This station serves Metra lines including Milwaukee District North service.

Madison Street Platform Access (P3)

Design Objective: Create direct platform access to platforms 1 and 3 on the north side of Union Station at Madison Street to enhance safety and accessibility for commuter passengers by allowing an alternative to entering and exiting the station through the heavily used and congested Concourse.

Convert Unused Mail Platform (P4)

Design Objective: Convert the existing unused mail platform on the south side of Union Station closest to the Chicago River (Track 30) to an accessible ADA-compliant passenger platform. The project includes code analysis, additional means of egress, lighting, communications, and signage, as well as a preliminary structural and environmental analysis for structures and equipment for the entire length of the platform.
